Shikaar ki aankhon mein jab maut ka aks utar aata hai,
Wahan se bhaagne ka har raasta, meri hi chaukhat par khatam ho jaata hai.

The heavy, metallic scent of burning camphor and suffocating incense filled the air, thick enough to choke the life right out of my lungs.
"Om, Mangalam Bhagwan Vishnu, Mangalam Garunadhwaja, Mangalam Pundarikaksha, Mangalaye Tano Hari..."
(May Lord Vishnu be auspicious, may the one with Garuda on his flag be auspicious, may the lotus-eyed Lord be auspicious, may Hari bring supreme auspiciousness...)
The panditโs chanting vibrated through the cold floorboards.
"Iti vivaha karmani sampurnam."
(Thus, the wedding rituals are fully completed.)
The final mantra echoed hollowly against the cold marble pillars, finalizing the sacred bond. But to me, it sounded like a death sentence. The gold-threaded crimson veil draped over my head felt as heavy as a lead shroud. I didn't feel like a bride. I felt like a lamb being decorated for a slaughterhouse.
With a final, binding gesture, the fire flared one last time. My fate was sealed in invisible blood. I had just gotten married to the ruthless king of the underworld clansโYuvraj Goenka.
He was the eldest son of the powerful Goenka dynasty, a family built on dark luxury and absolute control, ruled by three brothers. The youngest was barely a factor, but the middle brother, Abhigyan Goenka, was the man my marriage had originally been fixed with. Until he destroyed everything. Abhigyan ran away just a single day before the wedding, triggering a devastating conflict that nearly painted the altar in blood. Driven by pure fury and wounded honor, my brother was ready to slaughter the entire Goenka bloodline.
My value was reduced to a mere currency of pride, a blood debt paid right there at the mandap to bind two rival empires together before the world could see our family collapse. The eldest brotherโYuvrajโstepped into the burning embers of the conflict, claiming the empty space beside me at the altar to save both our families.
But as I stole a glance at him through the mesh of my veil, my heart thudded violently against my chest like a trapped bird. There was no salvation in his eyes. He looked down at me with an expression of freezing, absolute detachmentโhe had zero interest in this wedding, and even less interest in me.
Hot, silent tears tracked down my cheeks, smudging the heavy bridal makeup. This forced union didn't have my consent. My family had bartered me away like merchandise to protect their pride. I hated every single second of it.
Then, cutting through the tense silence of the mandap, a sharp, venomous voice shattered my thoughts. My new mother-in-law, Fatima Goenka, stepped forward. Her silk saree rustled as she adjusted her heavy gold jewelry, her eyes scanning my tear-stained face with a mocking, cruel amusement.
"Shouldn't you touch the elders' feet before the vidaai (farewell), daughter-in-law?" Fatima mocked, her tone dripping with condescension. "Or did the Sindhuvanshi family forget to teach you basic manners along with how to hold onto a groom?"
The insult pierced the room like a physical blade. I froze, the humiliation burning my skin, but before I could even draw a breath, a cold hand clamped down onto my shoulder. It was my father, Vedantha Sindhuvanshi. His grip was entirely devoid of comfort; his fingers dug into my flesh with a warning, punishing pressure.
"Bend your knees, Naintara," my father commanded, his voice dead, flat, and completely empty of parental love. He didn't look at my tears. He didn't care that his only daughter had just been handed over to a house of monsters. "You are a Goenka now. Do not embarrass my name any further on this altar."
"Dad, please..." I whispered, the words choking in my throat as I looked up at him through my blurred vision, silently begging him for a single shred of protection. "Don't leave me here. Please."
Vedantha didn't blink. He pulled his shoulder back, deliberately stepping away from me, completely severing the last thread of blood that bound us. "You ceased to be my responsibility the moment the final phera was taken. Bow your head and accept your fate."
A cruel, satisfied smirk spread across Fatimaโs lips as she watched my father discard me. "Listen to your father, child. In this house, we break stubborn birds very quickly."
My hands shook violently against the heavy silk of my lehenga as I slowly bent down, my fingers touching the cold floor near Fatima's feet. I didn't want their prayers. I didn't want their hypocritical blessings. Every ounce of grief inside me hardened into an icy, venomous fury.
I hate them. All of them. And I will watch this entire world burn before I let them break me.
Swallowing the bitter taste of betrayal, I rose unsteadily and turned my gaze toward my sister-in-law, Shraddha. She stood beside my brother, a mask of flawless, detached perfection painted on her face. Her lips curved into a tiny, superficial smile meant strictly for the watching eyes of high society, completely devoid of any real empathy.
Summoning my fracturing emotions one last time, I looked toward Aagam. My brother. The man who had protected me from the shadows of our childhood, the only anchor I had ever known in the cold wilderness of our home. For a single, desperate second, I lifted my head, seeking his gaze.
I caught the sharp, violent tightening of his jaw. His hands clenched at his sides, fighting a silent, brutal war within himself to maintain control under the heavy scrutiny of a hundred elite guests. He wanted to pull me away. He wanted to burn this mandap down. But the heavy chains of family honor, politics, and survival held him frozen in place.
Before he could succumb to his fury, he forced his posture to soften. He stepped forward, his heavy shadow eclipsing the studio lights above us. He lifted his trembling hand, placing it gently over the crown of my head. The warmth of his palm was the only real thing in this room of ghosts.
"May you find peace in your new home, Naintara," Aagam spoke out loud, his voice deep, hollow, and fiercely strained as he addressed the crowd, playing his part in the elite theater.
But as he leaned down closer, ostensibly to adjust the heavy gold border of my bridal veil, his voice dropped into a raw, broken whisper meant only for me.
"Forgive me, little sister. I had to let you go to keep you alive. Don't let them see you bleed."
The words tore through my soul, a bittersweet agony that confirmed my absolute isolation. He had let me go. He had surrendered me to the wolves.
Then, the final moment of the vidaai arrived. Escorted out of the venue, I stood at the threshold of the sleek, black getaway car. I turned my head back one last time, taking a final look at the only home I had ever knownโa home that had abandoned me without a single backward glance. The grand gates looked cold, looming like the entrance of a fortress that had successfully expelled its unwanted hostage.
The door clicked shut behind me, sealing me inside the suffocating, leather-scented darkness of the backseat next to my new husband. The car smoothly glided into the night, leaving the lights of my past behind.
I kept my eyes pinned to the window, watching my home disappear into the shadows, a single tear slipping past my lashes. Suddenly, a cold breeze cut through the silence. A large, heavily ringed hand reached out, brutally clamping onto my chin and forcing my face away from the glass.
Yuvraj leaned in close. His grip was a vice, tilting my head back until I was forced to stare straight into his dead, unforgiving eyes. His breath fanned hot against my cold lips as he spoke, his voice dropping into a low, cruel whisper that vibrated with absolute malice.
"Stop crying for a home that sold you to me, woman," Yuvraj rasped, his eyes scanning my terror-stricken face with pure disgust. "Look at me clearly and understand this. This marriage is nothing but a garbage transaction to settle a blood debt. Do not dare to harbor any pathetic hopes of a husband or a future in my house. You are merely a placeholder for an escaped coward. The moment you step through my doors, you belong to the darkโand I do not care if you survive it."
He threw my chin back with a mocking flick of his wrist, completely turning his back on me as he pulled out his phone, treating me like an invisible piece of cargo. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs, the sheer coldness of his cruelty sinking into my veins like ice water.
